What is SIP Trunking?
SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) Trunking is a voice service that connects your business phone system to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) using internet-based communications rather than traditional phone lines.
Instead of maintaining expensive PRI circuits or multiple carrier contracts across locations, businesses can consolidate voice services through a single SIP provider while benefiting from greater scalability, reliability, and operational control.

Frequently Asked Questions
Questions? We have answers!
How does SIP trunking work?
SIP trunking uses internet-based connectivity to connect a business phone system to the public telephone network, allowing organizations to place and receive calls without traditional telephone circuits.
What is a Session Border Controller?
A Session Border Controller or SBC is dedicated hardware and/or software that controls how phone are secured as well as how calls are initiated, conducted and terminated on a voice over internet protocol (VOIP) network. SBCs act as a router between a network and a carrier service ensuring that all calls are secure and have the highest quality of service possible.
What type of calling plans are available?
Depending on the customers requirements and design we have either metered trunks or unlimited trunks. Metered trunks are assigned a per minute usage fee for Domestic LD, Local and international calling. Unlimited trunks have a fixed for unlimited calling based on the package of LD only, Local/LD and international. For unlimited, there is a fair use policy based on normal calling patterns.
Can I make my own moves, adds, and changes?
The solution comes with a web-based Self Service Orchestration tool that allows you to manage and administer your account. Items such as adding phone numbers, changing route labels, signaling IPs and rerouting traffic are some of the many features available to you for managing your solution.
Can SIP trunking replace PRI circuits?
Yes. Many organizations deploy SIP trunking as a modern replacement for PRI services to reduce costs, improve scalability, and support cloud communications.
Is SIP trunking secure?
SIP trunking can be secured using technologies such as Session Border Controllers (SBCs), encrypted communications, and carrier security controls. COEO offers SBCs and our platform supports secure voice connectivity and interoperability.
How long does it take to port phone numbers?
Porting timelines vary by carrier and number quantity. Smaller projects may complete in as little as a few days, while larger projects can require additional coordination.
What phone systems are supported?
COEO SIP Trunking is designed to support virtually any PBX, cloud communications platform, unified communications solution, or hybrid environment.
What is the difference between SIP Trunking and PRI?
PRI (Primary Rate Interface) uses physical copper wires and traditional circuit-switched technology to connect your phone system, while SIP Trunking uses Internet Protocols to provide virtual, packet-switched communication channels. Additionally, PRI can only support voice data, while SIP Trunking handles voice, video, and messaging.
For organizations seeking greater flexibility, lower telecom costs, and improved business continuity, SIP trunking is often the preferred modernization path.
